In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Major events preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
