India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog After Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" level.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Various sections of the capital registered an AQI exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy threshold set by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable standards.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season approaches.
However earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership approached the highest court to propose a modification of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Court Decision and Enforcement
To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the request, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated hours throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded air quality spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.
International Effects
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a major problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Near Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
The situation in Delhi is attributed to a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating hazardous haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.
Medical and Financial Consequences
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million residents living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.
The contaminated air causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Air quality crisis is projected to be causing ten thousand early mortalities annually in the city.
