France will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
