The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
